Doctorate of Engineering in Chemical Engineering
The Chemical & Biological Engineering Department offers the opportunity to outstanding students with a BS or and MS in Chemical Engineering to participate in leading edge research projects. Graduate courses emphasize the fundamentals of our discipline and they also reflect the research interests of the faculty. Typically, a student finishes his/her MS degree within two years whereas Ph.D. students graduate in three to five years. Because we are a small department there is a very close interaction between the students and their advisors. MS students also have the opportunity to attain a certificate in Project Management whilst doing their degree.
Graduate students in the Chemical & Biological Engineering Department have the opportunity to do research in emerging technologies as well as in established Chemical Engineering fields. For example, Chemical Engineering professors are currently researching capillary electrochromatography, fabrication of nanomaterials, molecular dynamics simulations of nanostructures, purification of transgenic antibodies, molecular simulations of proteins at interfaces, and particle technology in pharmaceuticals and environmental applications.
The Department has emphasized the development of the application of engineering principles to biological systems. The laboratories dedicated to that research area are equipped with state of the art instrumentation.
Recent employers of Missouri S&T Chemical Engineering graduate students are:
ADNOC
Bechtel Corporation
Biotechnics India Pvt. Ltd.
Caterpillar Inc.
Dynalivery Corporation
Esquel Group
Exxon Mobil
Exxon Mobil Upstream Research Company
Intel Corporation
International Paper
LMS-CADSI
Maverick Technologies
Micron Technology
Milliken Chemicals
Monsanto Corporation
Schlumberger Technologies
UCB Bioproducts Inc.
Overseas and stateside applicants must apply for admittance into the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering graduate program at Missouri S&T no later than February 1 in order to be considered for funding during the Fall Semester.
The department has a very active student chapter of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE). The AIChE student chapter brings approximately 15 practicing chemical engineers per year to speak at their meetings. These engineers describe their work and the companies they work for.
Other organizations students participate in are Omega Chi Epsilon, the chemical engineering honor society, Tau Beta Pi, the engineering honor society and Alpha Chi Sigma, a service society for students in chemical-related fields.
