After graduating from what was then the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy (now Missouri S&T) in 1951 with a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering, Jack worked for several years as a chemical engineer, both in industry (Monsanto Company) and in the U.S. Army Chemical Corps. After military service he returned to Monsanto Company. In 1958, he received a Juris Doctor degree from St. Louis University and was admitted to the Bar of Missouri. He later attended the Advanced Management Program of Northwestern University.
Jack spent a significant part of his career as a patent lawyer with Monsanto Company and eventually became General Patent Counsel. After retiring from Monsanto, he spent several years in the private practice of patent law. During his career, he was active in several professional organizations including the Patent Section of the Metropolitan Bar Association of St. Louis (past chairman), Patent, Trademark and Copyright sections of the American Bar Association (member of council), American Patent Law Association (Board of Directors), and the Association of Corporate Patent Counsel (President).
He was a member of the Special Advisory Committee of the American Arbitration Association for preparation of the Patent Rules of Arbitration, effective June 1, 1983. He also served as Chairman of the Patent Committee of the National Association of Manufacturers and a member of the ad hoc industry committee involved in the 1984 revisions of the U.S. Patent Laws. He is the author of several published articles concerned with domestic and international patent/technology licensing.
For many years he served as a member of the Board of Directors of St. Patrick Center (St. Louis, Missouri) which is a charitable organization concerned with the rehabilitation of mentally ill and homeless men and women. Jack and his wife Ellen live in Chesterfield, Missouri. Jack was inducted into the Academy in 2013.
